Information for Counsellors:

The unit is able to run our standard programs on-site in schools. The HSC Stress lecture and programs are as follows:

1. LECTURES ON MANAGING HSC STRESS

  • For a maximum of 200 Year 11 or 12 students
  • Run for 50 minutes
  • Students are required to complete a 5-minute questionnaire before and after the lecture
  • Psychoeducation about stress and basic cognitive behavioural skills training

2. TAKING CHARGE FOR TEENAGERS GROUP PROGRAMS

  • The Taking Charge program looks at the management of depression, anxiety and low self-esteem (8 weeks)
  • Preselected students need to meet with the school counsellor to provide summary clinical information about their current difficulties
  • Group size: 8 – 10 students
  • Students aged 15 -18 years
  • A regular weekly time needs to be allocated
  • Session lengths: 90 minutes per week
  • Students are required to complete pre and post-intervention questionnaires

Overview of the Program Content:

Ø A cognitive-behavioural treatment program

Ø Psychoeducation: Understanding the main aspects of anxiety, depression and low self-esteem

Ø Cognitive strategies: identifying and challenging unhelpful patterns of thinking

Ø Behavioural strategies:

  • graded exposure
  • breathing re-training

Communication skills - students are taught to identify assertive communication and begin to practice an assertive style through role-playing and graded exposure.

3. MANAGING HSC STRESS WORKSHOPS

•  The Managng of HSC Stress program (4 weeks) looks at the management of stress during the student's senior years

•  Preselected students need to meet with the school counsellor to provide summary clinical information about their current difficulties

  • Group size: 8 – 10 students
  • Students in Year 11 or 12
  • A regular weekly time needs to be allocated
  • Session lengths: 90 minutes per week
  • Students are required to complete pre and post-intervention questionnaires

Overview of the Program Content:

Ø Psychoeducation: Understanding the stress reaction, e.g. the “fight or flight” response

Ø Identification of Stressors: Each student is asked to reflect on their own personal stressors

Ø Cognitive strategies: basic identification and challenging of unhelpful stress-provoking self-talk

Ø Behavioural strategies:

  • dealing with procrastination
  • breathing re-training
  • goal setting
  • structuring a study and leisure time plan
  • rewards for achievement of study goals
  • good sleep habits
